I recently had the privilege of making up some hand engraved rings for a couple's commitment ceremony in 2025.

I was contacted with a broad design brief with which to work from, with the design stage taking 3 to 4 weeks to complete, the brief was as follows:

Ring widths: 7 to 8mm

Material: Sterling Silver, maybe open to the idea of accent stones if necessary.

Brief: Use of hand engraving, with layers and depth, with a 'more you look, the more you see' approach. Design ideas in the table below:

Ring 1Ring 2
Summer & Autumn
Water & Air
Sunset & Night
Natural elements - trees, leaves, animals

Tree: Full / Falling
Water: Sea, rivers, pools
Air: Element of movement
Times of day: Fox, Wolf, Auroch, Deer, Dragonfly, Badger, Hedgehog, Bat
Sunrise and sunset
Night: Moon or crescent moon
Winter & Spring

Tree: Bare / Budding
Earth: Mountains or similar
Fire: Bonfire, volcano, or flame

Using the design ideas above, I came up with some initial drawings, which were tweaked to provide a final version.

Once the final version of the drawing was signed off, with the addition of some inside ring engraving, it was time to start working on the silver.

The finished rings which were given a light coating of black liquid enamel, the outer finish of the ring was given a brush finish, with the inside of the ring and the edges having a high polish finish.
